The 2008 SAPPA Scottish 9-Ball Masters was an event full of surprises. With the top 8 ranked players already qualified for the final stages, the 8 players who had qualified in Glenrothes back in August - Gordon Bain, Fraser Patrick, Andy McNiven, Greg Alexander, Joni Holden, Ryan Davie, Chris Cowie and Scott Kennedy - arrived hoping to cause a few upsets in the initial group phase.
In a change to the advertised format, the format was changed from Round Robin to Double Dlimination, thus meaning that there would be no "meaningless" matches, as can often happen in Round Robin play. It still meant that there would be 2 players qualifying from each group who would go on into the Quarter Finals. Of the 4 groups, Group 1 turned out to be the most fascinating as both the qualifiers, Gordon Bain and Fraser Patrick, eliminated the top 8 players, Stevie Capaldi and Davy Jack, from the event.
The Single Elimination phase was also full of fascintating matches with Gordon Bain sything his way through his half of the draw with impressive wins over Scottish number 1 Pat Holtz by 8 racks to 4 and the fast rising Fraser Patrick with a 9-4 scoreline. In the other half of the draw, Michael Valentine made quick work of his 2 opponents - Clark Smith by 8 racks to 3 and Greg Alexander 9-2 - to progress to the final.
The final was a fascinating encounter with Valentine taking an early lead, only to see it pegged back to 7-7 by Bain. Sadly, Bain couldn't add any more racks to his side of the scoreboard and Valentine managed to edge away to win the match and the £300 first prize and his first 9 Ball tournament win of the 2008/09 season.
