2008/09 SAPPA TOUR
Tour EVent 9

Styx, Kirkcaldy

9 March 2009

Fraser Patrick brought the 2008/09 SAPPA Tour to a close by winning his second Tour Event of the season in Styx, Kirkcaldy at the weekend. Due to pool calendars crossing, there was a lower than hoped for turnout of 37 players but what was lost in quantity was more than made up for in quality with some excellent matches all through the tournament. The lower numbers also called for a slight change in format with the tournament being Double Elimination until 8 players remained, instead of the usual 16. This meant that there was more chances of players meeting more than once during the event and, thanks to the randomness of both the Double Elimination chart and the Quarter Final re-draw, this is what happened.

The stand-out performance of the day came from local player Paul McGowan who made it to the Semi Final stages of the event. He started his tournament with excellent 7-4 victories over Billy Edmond and Rex Brady before Stevie Capaldi put him over to the Losers' Bracket in the qualifying round. From there, however, he tore through the field eliminating SAPPA Tournament Director Tam Talent by 6 racks to 1 and Adam Smith, the winner of the last event, by 8 racks to 3 before he ran into eventual winner Patrick.

Fraser didn't have it all his own way either being put over to the Losers' Bracket after a 7-1 loss to Andy Morris but Fraser was able to exact his revenge in the Losers' Bracket qualifying round, beating Morris by 6 racks to 2. In the Quarter Finals, he eliminated his good friend Gordon Bain 8-1 before beating the aforementioned McGowan 8-3 to reach the final.

In the final, Patrick would meet the resurgent Stevie Capaldi who was quietly going about his business in the other half of the draw. Capaldi managed to qualify undefeated for the last 8 before beating Sunderland's Chris Cowie 8-6 and Arbroath's Davy Jack 9-3 to set up the final with Patrick.

The final turned out to be one of the best at a SAPPA event. Capaldi took an early lead and then extended it to 7-3 up before a bad contact during a run-out stopped him from making the score 8-3. From there, it was nearly "The Fraser Patrick Show" with Capaldi barely getting a shot for 4 racks as the score was closed up. There was always the feeling about the match that it would go to hill-hill and those expectations were lived up to. In the end, it was Fraser who managed to get the better of the short safety battle in the final rack to win the last SAPPA Tour Event of the 2008/09 season.
