2008/09 SAPPA TOUR
sappa tOUR EVENT 8

Riley's Kirkintilloch

15 February 2009

Sunderland's Adam Smith became the third new SAPPA Tour Event winner in as many events when he beat Arbroath's Greg Alexander by 9 racks to 6 in the final of SAPPA's eighth Tour Event of the 2008/09 season at Riley's Kirkintilloch. Smith had been knocking on the door of a SAPPA tournament win since he first started playing in SAPPA events some 18 months ago when he reached the final of his first SAPPA event - the 2007 US Open Qualifier in Glasgow.

The final stages of the event, the single elimination last 16, always throws up some tough matches and it turned out that the eventual finalists would have to play at their very best to reach the final. For Alexander, the draw brought him the ever-dangerous Stewart McPhee whom he brushed past by 8 racks to 2. This was followed by a Quarter Final win over Darren Murray (8-2) and an excellent Semi Final victory over top Scottish 8-Ball player Scott Gillespie (9-5). Smith seemed to get the tougher draw with a last 16 hill-hill match against Stirling's Iain Mackintosh followed by excellent wins over Clark Smith in the Quarter Finals (8-3) and Michael Valentine in the Semi Final (9-7).

In the end, however, it was Adam Smith who stood triumphant with an excellent 9-6 victory over the Arbroath-based player. For their efforts, Greg won £140 as runner-up while Adam received £300.
