2008/09 SAPPA TOUR
Tour EVent 6

Riley's Kirkintilloch

7 December 2008

Fraser Patrick won his first SAPPA title winning the sixth Tour Event of the 2008/09 SAPPA calendar with an enthralling 10 racks to 7 win over Larkhall's Scott Gillespie. A total of 51 players turned up at Riley's Kirkintilloch to vie for a piece of the £1,000 prize fund including a number of young first-time players at a SAPPA event.

As is commonplace at SAPPA events these days, there were a number of surprise results during the Double Elimination phase of the event, including Perth's up and coming Dean Thomson getting past Arbroath's Davy Jack. Another result of note came from Sunderland-based SAPPA player Chris Cowie who beat Scottish number 3 Clark Smith in a well contested match.

Because of these results, the last 16 re-draw brought up some interesting matches. It was at this stage that the aforementioned Davy Jack, who had managed to qualify through the Losers' Bracket, brought Pat Holtz's dominant run of 5 straight SAPPA Tour Events to an end, meaning that for the first time this season someone else would be winning a Tour Event. Jack's tournament was to come to an end at the hands of eventual runner-up Scott Gillespie. Gillespie, who decided to play in the tournament at the last minute, had worked his way undefeated into the last 16 and made light work of Gordon Bain by 8 racks to 1, Stevie Capaldi by 8 racks to 4 and Davy Jack by 9 racks to 7.

In the other half of the draw, Fraser Patrick, a former professional on snooker's Main Tour, was getting past Ian Mackintosh and Chris Cowie, both by 8 racks to 6 and Michael Valentine by 9 racks to 7 bringing about a final that was to provide some top quality pool by both players. After a few close calls in past tournaments Patrick, was not to be denied his first SAPPA tournament win this time, and the £350 first prize, as he managed to close out the match with an excellent 10-7 win over Gillespie. For his efforts, Gillespie won £170.
