2008/09 SAPPA TOUR
TOUR EVENT 5

Riley's Stirling

16 November 2008

Riley's Stirling played host to the 45 players who turned up to play in the fifth Tour Event of the 2008/09 SAPPA Tour, includng the return to the SAPPA Tour of Tam Walkinshaw after a long absence. Let's hope its not a one-off visit, Tam!

The most anticipated match up of the early rounds was between former Scottish 9-Ball Champions Jayson Shaw and Michael Valentine. In a true contrast of playing styles - Valentine being methodical in his shot selection and execution with Shaw being more instinctive - it was Shaw who came out on top with an excellent 7 racks to 2 victory over Valentine, sending The Yeti to the losers' bracket. Valentine's tournament was to finish early, however, with a 2-5 loss to Fraser Patrick in the Losers' Bracket qualifying round. Another suprise performance came from Falkirk's Martin Ure who, after an excellent 7-3 result against Kev Donohoe was followed by a 7-4 loss to Jayson Shaw, managed to fight his way through the Losers' Bracket to qualify.

The Single Elimination phase threw up some excellent matches. Pat Holtz made his way to the final by exacting his revenge on Gordon Bain for the loss in the Masters the day before with an 8-6 victory before victories over Clark Smith (8-6) and Chris Cowie gave him a chance to keep on in his quest to win every SAPPA Tour Event of the 2008/09 season.

In the other half of the draw, Jayson Shaw had a more difficult time of it with victories over Fraser Patrick by 8 racks to 6, Alec McDowall by 8 racks to 4 and Stevie Capaldi by 8 racks to 3.

The final turned out to be a classic with both players playing phenominal pool. Holtz, at one point, was 7 racks to 2 up before Shaw started a massive fightback bringing the score back to 7 each. In the end, the fightback was too much for "The Wizard Of Shaw" and Holtz won his fifth straight SAPPA Tour Event of the 2008/09 season.
