SAPPA Tour Event 9
Styx, Glenrothes
11 February 2007
Michael Valentine added to his tally of SAPPA Tour wins with a 9-8 win over Pat Holtz at Styx, Glenrothes. A total of 61 players turned up to the venue, the newest on the SAPPA Tour and sister club of Styx in Kirkcaldy, home to the Scottish 9-Ball Championships.
Both Valentine and Holtz had emerged undefeated from the Double Elimination phase of the tournament. In the last 16, Valentine disposed of local player Paul McGowan by 7 racks to 3, then Jayson Shaw with a very one-sided 7-1 scoreline and qualified for the final beating Clark Smith 8 racks to 4. Meanwhile, Holtz was taking care of newcomer Stuart McPhee, who was playing in his second ever SAPPA tournament, in the last 16 with a 7 racks to 1 score. After getting by Scott Gillespie with an impressive 7-2 score, Holtz then beat Stevie Capaldi 8-5 to set up the meeting with the reigning Scottish number 1.
In the race-to-9 final, things were fairly tight until 4-4, when Valentine put in a 4-rack spurt to take an 8-4 lead, putting him on the hill, but Holtz never knows when to quit and managed to get back to 8-8, forcing a deciding rack. In the last rack, however, a loose safety shot from Holtz allowed Valentine the chance that he was looking for and he finished off the rack to take the win and the £390 first prize.
