2005 SMIRNOFF SCOTTISH MASTERS
The 2005 Smirnoff Scottish Masters too place at Pennies in Falkirk on Sunday 19 June with 16 of the best players in Scotland playing for a piece of the £1,500 prizefund. As it was last year, this year's Masters was a tournament that had pretty much everything with exciting matches and shocks right throughout the day.
The format of the Smirnoff Scottish Masters was the same as last year with only 16 players taking part. The top 8 players on the Official Ranking List were automatically invited to play in the tournament along with last year's defending champion, Pat Holtz. They were joined by 7 qualifiers who had made their way from all over Scotland. The 16 players were drawn into 4 groups of 4 who would play round-robin matches with the top 2 from each group going on to form the quarter finalists.

Group One provided the biggest shock of the day with Michael Valentine, unbeaten in SAPPA Tour Events in the last 12 months, failing to get past the group phase. His day started off badly with a 5-3 loss to Paddy Moir and finished with a miserable 5-0 whitewash at the hands of the ever-improving Clark Smith

A very tight group and one that took the calculators to work out who had qualified for the knock-out phase. Sadly, it was 8-Ball player Scott Gillespie who was knocked out of the tournament by a single rack, due to Stevie Capaldi's better rack difference.

Another one for the calculators here with Pat Holtz, Jim O'Hare and Darren Raine all ending up on the same number of points. This one was a little easier to work out with Darren Raine losing out to Jim O'Hare due to Jim winning more racks.

Group 4 was more clear-cut with the top 2 seeds, Davie Jack and Ross McInnes, qualifying. Davie put up a great display to beat Ross McInnes by 5 racks to 3 in the group phase match in what was to be a preview of this year's final. This gave Davie a 100% unbeaten record going into the knock-out phase of this year's Smirnoff Scottish Masters.

Sadly, due to circumstances beyond his control, Paddy had to withdraw from the tournament at the semi-final stage meaning that Ross McInnes qualified for the final.

Congratulations go to Davie Jack for reaching the final and putting up such an impressive show over the day winning £240 for his efforts, but it is The Flying Scotsman and legend of Scottish Pool, Ross McInnes, who takes the congratulations and the £500 first prize while adding yet another title to his already extremely impressive list.
